The Bad "S" Word

It’s SUGAR!

This month’s 60 minutes program devoted an entire segment to endocrinologist, Robert Lustig’s theory that Sugar is a toxin and is responsible for the surge of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease in this country. Even scarier research points to the fact that sugar feeds cancerous tumors.

Sugar. You may be thinking, isn’t it a staple? We were brought up with it, pacified with it and we were conditioned to think that it was one of life’s pleasures…

Well guess again…

It’s as addictive as Tobacco and Alcohol and can reek havoc on your blood vessels, your adrenals, your liver, your insulin and, it can fuel the growth of cancer which is of great concern to me as I battled it eight years ago.

Part of what I do as director of the Liphe Balance Center in Weston, Connecticut, is to help people break bad food addictions. Sugar is one of our specialties. We offer a three day, nutritious liquid feast that rids the body of harmful toxins which naturally decreases inflammation–the cause of our common aches and pains. The addition of healthy oils and mineral salts help to balance the body which reduces cravings.

Oils, like coconut oil or organic olive oil, help to stabilize blood sugar and balance the body. Most sugar cravings are for salt. Not table salt which is bleached, but pure Himalayan sea salt which has 80 plus minerals most of which we are lacking. Salt, a natural mineral, is the transport system used to carry nutrients to the body and since most of our food is processed or grown in soil deprived of minerals, we go for the bad adrenal stimulants which are sugar and caffeine to give us our energy.

I can tell you first hand that there is life after sugar. You can conquer your cravings and be the healthy person that you deserve to be.

I LOVE sugar, and would be like a junkie without it. However, can’t you be moderate in your intake, and still be healthy? I have cut down sweets tremendously, but still like to have a little here and there (read: can’t quit the habit totally).
